‘There’s an island of jewels?’ Graham asked after I’d told them the story.

‘Lama la said my dad was searching for an object. A weapon of some sort. He said if I found it, it would bring him home.’

‘And you reckon the weapon is on this jewel island?’

‘Why else would he show—’ I stopped. He didn’t show it to me. And it wasn’t just something I’d read either. Lama la had said I’d written it. A more disturbing memory now crawled inside my head to make its home. A word…

…“Tulku”.

I didn’t say anything about that to the others. A different, parallel world was one thing, but past lives? Even after everything, I didn’t even swallow that one.

‘That’s all he told you?’ Graham said. ‘That there’s some kind of weapon you’re supposed to find? Sounds dodgy. And, you know, highly unspecific. Did it have a name? Do you know what it looks like at least?’

I pushed my new thought to one side. ‘I can’t remember the name, but he said it’d be hidden in plain sight. And it’s…’ I attempted to close my three middle fingers together. ‘… sort of peg shaped?’

‘I dunno about this, Est. It seems really vague.’

‘The last thing he said was that there was someone who could help me. Someone who could see.’

I looked at Graham, then at Lily.

Lily raised an eyebrow. ‘That’s settled then,’ she said, almost to herself.

‘What’s settled?’ Graham said.

Lily leaned forwards and whispered. ‘We go and find the person most likely to help.’

He raised an eyebrow. ‘And that is?’

‘We go and see Charlie.’
